Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, took the initiative to explain India’s semiconductor ecosystem on a whiteboard during a media interaction after the approval of three semiconductor units by the Union Cabinet. The Cabinet approved proposals for setting up three semiconductor plants, including a mega fab by Tata Group, with an investment of Rs 1.26 lakh crore. The units will manufacture chips for various sectors like defence, automobiles, and telecommunications and will commence construction within the next 100 days. This move is seen as a significant step towards fulfilling the Atmanirbhar Bharat promise and positioning India as a major semiconductor manufacturing hub globally by 2029.
Union Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of these proposals, stating that they represent a giant leap for the country in the semiconductor value chain. PM Modi’s vision for a 20-year plan on semiconductors underscores the government’s commitment to technological advancement and self-reliance. Additionally, the Tata Group’s proposal to establish a semiconductor assembly and test facility in Assam will further boost the semiconductor industry in India. The facility, with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, is expected to create over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs, making it the first semiconductor unit in the Northeast region.
This strategic move towards semiconductor manufacturing not only aligns with the Make-in-India vision but also signals India’s aspirations to become a key player in the global semiconductor market. The government’s focus on enhancing domestic semiconductor production capacity and creating job opportunities reflects a proactive approach towards strengthening India’s position in the technology sector.
