Clairton City Schools in Pennsylvania are gearing up to participate in a pilot tutoring program utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance reading proficiency among elementary students. The initiative comes in response to the alarming statistic that nearly 80% of elementary students in the Clairton City School District are not proficient in reading.

The program, facilitated by Literacy Pittsburgh, will involve tutors visiting the school to meet with students twice a week. These tutors will utilize lesson plans that incorporate AI technology to tailored to each student’s individual learning needs. Caitlin Griffiths from Literacy Pittsburgh explained that after each lesson, the AI technology will assess the student’s understanding by asking a set of questions. Based on the student’s responses, the AI will generate a specific lesson plan to address the areas where the student may need further support.

Although the tutoring sessions are set to kick off next week, the technology is still in the process of being developed for the pilot phase. However, there is hope that this program will not only benefit the students in Clairton but also expand to include more students in the future. Principal Deb Maurizio expressed her excitement about the use of AI in education, stating that it allows for personalized learning that meets students where they are at in their educational journey.

Once the pilot phase concludes in May, Clairton City Schools and Catalyst Academy will join three other districts in expanding the program to accommodate up to 100 students in the fall. This innovative approach to tutoring aims to address the needs of students in the district and potentially revolutionize the way education is delivered in the future.
