Elon Musk’s SpaceX has launched its first satellites that will facilitate ‘Direct-to-cell’ capability. The six satellites were launched on January 2, and when fully operational, they will act as ‘cell-phone towers in the sky’, increasing the chances of network connectivity ‘everywhere’. Cell phones with LTE capability will be able to make use of the Direct to Cell technology, allowing seamless global access to texting, calling, and browsing. This technology will be especially beneficial in rural, underdeveloped, and hard-to-reach areas where establishing a traditional communication network is challenging. The satellites are expected to provide text services this year, with voice, data, and IoT services becoming available from 2025. Through this technology, space-based internet and phone services will enable people in remote areas to gain connectivity.
