GSI Technology has been awarded a $1.1 million contract by AFWERX (the innovation arm of the Department of the U.S. Air Force) to develop an AI chip that will address various challenges faced by the Air Force. The chip will leverage GSI Technology’s next-generation Associative Processing Unit-2 (APU2) and its in-memory architecture to enable high-data computation and AI capabilities. The company plans to use the funds to develop algorithms that can be applied to in-aircraft search and rescue, object detection, moving target indication, change detection, and image navigation in GPS-denied situations. The AI chip is expected to enhance mission capabilities and support the Air Force in identifying and responding to threats quickly.
GSI Technology CEO Lee-Lean Shu believes that the company’s APU2 chip is uniquely equipped to address the Air Force’s big data challenges. He highlights the chip’s scalable design, compact size, and low power consumption as key features that make it ideal for edge applications like moving target indication and anomaly detection. Shu states that the AI chip will bolster national security and technological superiority by enhancing the Air Force’s ability to swiftly identify and respond to threats.
