Being born after assisted reproductive technology (ART) is not associated with higher body mass index (BMI) at age 5 to 8 years, according to a study published in the journal PLOS Medicine. Researchers examined the associations between different fertility treatments and BMI in children aged 5 to 8 years and found that there was no significant difference in BMI between children born after ART and those born without fertility treatment. The prevalence of obesity was 1.9% in children born after ART and 2.7% in those born without fertility treatment. The researchers concluded that the findings provide reassuring results for couples seeking help with infertility.
