2023 saw significant breakthroughs in three key areas of technology: artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and augmented reality (AR). AI made significant progress, with ChatGPT, a generative AI model, being integrated into everyday devices like smartphones and laptops. However, there are downsides to AI, such as the difficulty in discerning between real and artificially generated faces, which can make deepfakes harder to detect. Quantum computing also made strides, with the launch of IBM’s System Two quantum computer and the release of a less noisy 133-qubit quantum chip called “Heron.” AR technology, including Apple’s Vision Pro headset, also advanced, bringing us closer to the mainstream adoption of mixed reality. Robotics and electrical engineering breakthroughs were also noteworthy, with progress in areas like Star Wars-style laser weapons and 6G systems.
