The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School (CMS) district has been at the forefront of a growing concern related to weapons being found on school campuses. In response to this trend that continues to affect school districts around the country, CMS has concretely invested in multiple measures to enhance school safety. High profile incidents, such as a student stabbing at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, have increased the urgency to address these safety concerns.
In previous years, CMS had also witnessed a significant rise in such cases. However, the situation has drastically improved in the last one and half years, owing to the steps taken by the district. Some examples of these strides include minimizing the number of firearms found from 31 in the 2021-22 school year to only seven in the following year.
CMS has efficiently utilized technology and communication to bring this change. Metal detectors and surveillance systems have been installed at every high school, and the district has also set up an anonymous tip line. Extra staff was also brought in to ensure the safety of the students further.
In addition to safety measures, partnering with student advocates has also proven to be beneficial. Meetings with CMS Chief Operations Officer Brian Schultz and Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill have facilitated discussions about crucial issues affecting students, and student suggestions have played a key role in refining the implemented strategies.
Recognizing the success of CMS’ efforts, representatives from 30 different school districts across the country have visited in the past year, reflecting interest in emulating CMS’s effective safety measures. Moving forward, CMS continues to prioritize creating a secure environment for students and is consistently working on enhancing its safety protocols.
