According to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023, 92% of surveyed 14-18 year olds in India reported knowing how to use a smartphone, indicating the widespread access to this technology. However, the report also highlighted a significant gender disparity in smartphone ownership, with only 20% of girls surveyed owning a device compared to 44% of boys. This ownership gap can limit the ways in which these devices can be used, as certain tasks and skills are dependent on device ownership.
