The Amarillo City Council has awarded over $14 million to the Amarillo Police Department for a camera, records, and digital evidence management system. The nine-year contract with Axon Enterprises will provide products, services, and technical support to improve efficiency in both patrol and case filing for investigators. The system will include body and car cameras, interview room recording, and digital evidence and police records management. It will also provide unlimited storage for data. Chief Martin Birkenfeld of the Amarillo Police Department stated that the new technology will help future-proof the department and create a sustainable plan for digital evidence storage. It will also enhance officer safety by allowing for better communication and real-time information in dangerous situations. The new system is expected to roll out within the next two months.
