The City of Lincoln is offering cash incentives to residents who install new heating technology in their homes. The incentives are part of an effort to promote energy efficiency and sustainability. Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird announced the new program, which provides a $1,000 incentive for the purchase and installation of air source heat pumps. Low-income residents may be eligible for an additional $3,000 from the city, and all residents can combine these incentives with an $800 incentive from the Lincoln Electric System Sustainable Energy Program.
Air source heat pumps are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to heat and cool homes. They absorb heat from the air outside a building and release it inside, providing both heating and cooling capabilities. By utilizing this technology, residents can save money on their energy bills, improve indoor air quality, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The City of Lincoln has allocated $500,000 for the pilot incentive in its 2022-2024 budget. Forty percent of the funds will be directed to low- and moderate-income residents and will be distributed through the Urban Development Department. The remaining 60% will be available to single-family homeowners and will be distributed through the Lincoln Electric System. These funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until August 31, or until the funds are expended.
