Thousands of families in Tennessee are experiencing significant delays in receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to issues with state technology. Paula Davis, a mother of two teenage boys, waited three months for her SNAP eligibility to be processed. She contacted the Tennessee Justice Center for assistance and discovered that many other families were facing similar delays. The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) implemented new technology in July 2023 to improve the application and processing of SNAP benefits, but the delays have persisted. Despite an influx of applications and increased workload, TDHS has not provided a timeline for resolving the issues. Failure to process SNAP applications within 30 days could lead to legal action and fines imposed by the federal government. The Tennessee Justice Center is concerned that families will continue to go hungry if TDHS does not speed up the processing of SNAP applications. While Davis’ benefits were eventually reapproved, she remains concerned for families still struggling with food insecurity.
