Heirloom Carbon Technologies has launched the first commercial direct air capture (DAC) facility in the US, with the capacity to capture 1,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The process uses renewable energy to extract CO2 from limestone, creating calcium hydroxide powder that draws CO2 from the atmosphere. The captured CO2 can be stored underground or integrated into concrete. Heirloom has secured a position in the Department of Energy Regional DAC Hub program, potentially securing federal funding of up to $600m for a DAC facility in Louisiana. The firm has also partnered with Microsoft to remove up to 315,000 metric tonnes of CO2 over 10 years.
